# Banking and Financial Services Website Accessibility: A Practical Guide

Banks, fintech companies, and financial advisory sites sit in a particularly exposed position when it comes to web accessibility. They handle money, regulated disclosures, and identity verification — all activities where a user who cannot complete a flow is not just inconvenienced but locked out of a financial service the law often requires be available to everyone.

This guide walks through the five accessibility issues that cause the most real-world problems on banking and financial services sites, with code-level fixes you can ship this week. It is written for developers, compliance teams, and agency builders who maintain sites for banks, credit unions, broker-dealers, insurance companies, and fintech platforms.

Why Accessibility Matters for Financial Services

Accessibility in financial services is not a nice-to-have. It intersects three different pressure points:

Regulatory exposure. In the US, the ADA applies to banking websites as places of public accommodation, and federal banks are separately subject to Section 508. In the EU, the European Accessibility Act explicitly names banking and consumer financial services as in-scope services. For Indian fintech, RBI circulars and SEBI advisories are increasingly citing accessibility as a consumer protection issue.

Litigation risk. Banking and financial services are consistently one of the top three sectors for ADA website lawsuits. A plaintiff who cannot complete a loan application, deposit a check, or read a prospectus has a textbook complaint.

Key rules: use for any cell that labels a row or column, add scope="col" or scope="row", and include a that summarizes what the table shows. WCAG SC 1.3.1 (Info and Relationships) covers this.

2. Authentication and Multi-Step Flows

Login, two-factor authentication, and account opening are the highest-stakes flows on a banking site. They also break accessibility in two common ways.

Session timeouts with no warning. WCAG SC 2.2.1 (Timing Adjustable) requires that users be warned before a session expires and given the option to extend it. Most bank session-timeout modals are built for security compliance only and skip the accessibility requirement. The fix is a two-step pattern: at 1 minute remaining, show an accessible live region announcement ("Your session will expire in 1 minute. Press Extend to stay signed in.") with an Extend button. Don't silently redirect to a login page.

OTP input fields without programmatic labels. A common pattern is six separate boxes for a one-time password, labeled visually but not to assistive technology. Fix:

3. Form Errors That Only Communicate in Color

A form that marks invalid fields with a red border but no accompanying text or icon fails WCAG SC 1.4.1 (Use of Color) and SC 3.3.1 (Error Identification). Banking forms commonly make this worse by placing the error message far from the field, or only showing a generic "Please fix the errors below" banner.

    4. Inaccessible PDFs for Disclosures, Statements, and Prospectuses

    Banking and financial services generate enormous volumes of PDFs: account statements, prospectuses, fee disclosures, tax documents, regulatory filings. Most are exported from document templates that produce PDFs with no tagging, no reading order, and no alt text on tables.

    A PDF that fails accessibility is in scope for ADA and Section 508 liability just like a web page. The EAA explicitly covers PDF disclosures distributed to EU consumers. The fixes are well-understood but often skipped:

    • Generate PDFs from properly-tagged source documents (Word, InDesign, HTML → PDF pipelines that preserve structure)
    • Include a document title in metadata
    • Tag all headings, lists, and tables with their semantic role
    • Provide alt text for charts and figures (not just "Figure 3" — an actual description of the data)
    • Set the document language

    5. Charts and Data Visualizations With No Text Alternative

    Financial sites lean heavily on charts: performance vs benchmark, portfolio allocation, loan amortization, spending categories. A chart rendered as an image or a canvas with no text alternative is invisible to a screen reader user.

    Two working patterns:
